A comparative history of slavery in the Spanish and Portuguese Empires is needed

Brazil's slavery was uniquely Portuguese - shaped by centuries of African contact, Arab loanwords, and a legal system where manumission was common. 

This month, while discussing my article "Transatlantic Slavery and Africa's Influence on Europe" with Spanish speakers, I discovered that the Portuguese word alforria (manumission) is not used in Spanish. I swapped this word of Arabic origin for manumisión, derived from Latin, and was understood.

Remembering the Film "Dunkirk: Ninth Anniversary of Its Release in July 2017

July 21 of 2026 is the ninth anniversary of the release of one of the finer films about World War II. On that day the Christopher Nolan-directed epic, "Dunkirk," was released in theaters in the US and UK, to rave reviews by audiences and critics alike.

That anniversary re-entered my thoughts a few days ago. As a former Archivist for the state of North Carolina, my habit is to save almost everything that comes my way: bills, letters, receipts, notes, interesting articles.
